I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of luck. Some people seem to glide through life, opportunities falling into their laps as if the universe is handing out golden tickets. Meanwhile, others struggle, working tirelessly yet feeling like they’re constantly hitting a brick wall. For a long time, I wondered—why is it that some people seem so lucky?
And then I realised: luck often isn’t something that just happens. It’s often something you create.
The Truth Behind ‘Lucky Breaks’
Whenever I’ve looked back on moments where I’ve thought, Wow, that was lucky, there’s always been a trail of actions leading up to it. That amazing opportunity? It only happened because I put myself out there. That right-place-right-time moment? I had to actually be somewhere for it to happen. That time someone just ‘happened’ to hear my music and want to work with me? Well, that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t shared it in the first place.
It’s easy to look at successful people and assume they’ve had a lucky break. But when you dig deeper, you see there’s often years of effort or at least a confident leap of faith. There are very few people who are given it all in their lap.
You Have to Be in the Game
Of course, timing and circumstance do play a role. But even then, you have to be in the game to catch those moments. If you don’t take the shot, you can’t score. If you don’t reach out, you won’t make the connection. If you don’t put the work in, you won’t have anything to show when opportunity knocks.
I’ve had times where I hesitated—where I second-guessed myself, overthought things, or waited for the ‘perfect’ moment. And surprise, surprise—nothing happened. Then there have been times when I just did the thing, even if I wasn’t 100% sure, even if it felt scary, even if I wasn’t convinced it would work. And guess what? That’s when the so-called luck happened.
Create Your Own Luck
So, if you’re waiting for a lucky break, here’s my advice: stop waiting. Start moving. Take the action, follow through, and do the thing. You never know which step will lead to that magic moment, but one thing is for sure—if you don’t take any steps, nothing will happen.
Luck isn’t something that chooses you. You choose it.
